Tomato Huntin'

HEY DEAR FOLKS, it’s tamato huntin’ season and I been shooting’ around. I tagged a couple of new ones last year including a cherry that’s so-blue-it’s-also-black with a rosey pink bottom. If you come to C&K’s green house any Saturday in May, you will find the little beauty in its infantile state. Upon its full grown state, the dark little babies with the starry pink bottoms will grace your happy table in such an original way that not a single soul will be able to say, "Oh yeah, I saw those at so and so's." No, so and so has not seen them either, you are the only one!

Seek and ye shall find, so I’ve been hunting all day. Kathy might think I been playing but it’s serious business Buddy Bingo better believe it. Got my sights on another so-black-it-might-be-blue. I don’t have a dark tomato cultivar that's also big. I used to but can’t remember what it was called and didn’t save any seeds ‘cuz it cracked so bad. All I have is the favorite standby - Black Brandywine, since it will give you 30 tomatoes where most others will only give you ten.

SO, I’m a huntin’ a big black bear of a tomato that gives me a hunnert, well at least twenty. The dude that sells the seed says it’s new. I love new. Old too, but a black tomato that’s almost a pound!, that he says is the best he’s ever tasted?, and pretty too!, and super productive?!, a cross between two of my alltime favs, Cherokee Purple and Brandywine??!, why didn’t I think of that?

Ok, every seed vender wanting to sell something raves about their stuff so suckers like me will buy ‘em, yes I will. But they don't get in the green house just because somebody else thinks they're great. I gotta think they're great, but won’t be able to tell they're great ‘til this coming September when I have tracked them through of August and have all my necessary questions answered like, how many did I get? did they CRACK? are they tasty? did the plants cave in to the shpeck and DIE?, did I get tomatoes all the way to frost?, etc, etc, etccc. But hunting is how you get the next great find so you have to get your tomato huntin' camo on and start snoop doggy sneakin' around all over the world and it’s EXCITING!

ALSO, I got all the seeds out of my biggest tomato last year, a solid gold 3 pounder. You want to get a Personal Best? That one will do it. I might get a four pounder this year. It's time for a new PB, I've had two 3 pounders now, and I need a FOUR. So I'm hunting it.

Happy dreams. The days are now 25 minutes longer (in the evening) than they were before Christmas. ’Mater season is coming better believe it!! C&K’s every Saturday in May, long way away, but it always gets here, wooot hoo hoo!
